Image Magick

Brightboxes come pre-installed with the Ubuntu Imagemagick package.

If you have an old Brightbox which is missing the Imagemagick programs, you can install them with sudo apt-get install imagemagick.

Ubuntu Dapper

Ubuntu Dapper is very old now and this note will not apply to most customers.

The Ubuntu Dapper Brightboxes came pre-installed with Image Magick 6.2 from the official Ubuntu Dapper distribution and have been extensively tested with many Rails applications.

There are known memory leaks when using this library with the rmagick gem. If this is causing you problems, you could try the 6.3 packages with the new rmagick version 2.2 gem, though they are currently in beta.

We have backported Image Magick 6.3 from Ubuntu Hardy which is currently available for beta testing. You can find installation instructions here.
